CCF founded to raise funds, support NET research
By Becky Martins
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation (CCF) is the oldest nonprofit carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumor organization in the United States. It was founded in 1968. Chartered by the State of New York, the foundation’s mission is to conduct, encourage and to increase awareness; educate the general public and healthcare professionals regarding carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumors (NETs); and serve as patient advocates.
The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation began as the Carcinoid Tumor and Serotonin Research Foundation in 1968 when the National Institutes of Health (NIH) terminated funding for rare cancers. The name was changed to the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation in 1995. CCF is currently involved in following endeavors:
- Provides information and educational materials for medical professionals, patients, caregivers, and the general public via its website — which has had more than 1,000,000 visitors — social media, and an e-newsletter
- Serves as patient advocates within the carcinoid/NET community and the public, at the government level and with rare disease organizations, and on the Worldwide NET Cancer Awareness Day Alliance
- Provides e-mail and toll-free telephone support
- Serves as a clearinghouse for support groups across the country for individuals who seek and would benefit from support services and the opportunity to share their concerns, as well as learn from others who have been challenged by NET cancer
- Conducts conferences to educate and raise awareness of these rare conditions
- Based on resources/funds available, provides grants for carcinoid-related research projects by other institutions and also for carcinoid support groups located throughout the United States
- Continually works to improve access to accurate and up-to-date information
Visit CCF’s official website for more information on the organization, as well as carcinoid and related NET cancers. CCF can also be contacted by phone, email, or mail.
